Editor’s Note April 2019
It is the start of the new financial year. In ancient cultures like that of the Romans and Hindus, New Year’s Day is always celebrated on or around April 1st. It closely follows the vernal equinox (March 21st.) In fact, in the medieval times, in most parts of Europe, March 25, ‘The Feast of Annunciation’, was celebrated as the beginning of the new year. The whole point behind this is to explain why we have 1st April (fools’ day) coinciding with the start of the financial year. Is it to remind big corporations and businesses to continue making a fool of themselves, or devise new ways of fooling consumers in the name of marketing, and creating needs for change when there is none?
March has left behind a plethora of good thoughts and great deeds. For this issue, we have serious and severe discussions about the ongoing popularity of mobile wallets like Paytm. With recent investments, its valuation is likely to touch $18 billion soon.
Our very own Ola is taking on Uber in Australia and UK. Finally we have a startup unicorn showing some muscle to change the battleground. Had Flipkart forayed into selling their “karts” in Amazon land – USA, Walmart might have been an Indian company. Everything is possible if we have an ambition of the wildest kind. Hope we have more startups who can dream to dare, and just not raise their valuations and exit. Every year we at Exhibit, search over 5000 start ups and hand pick 50 of them to pitch in front of VCs and do the matchmaker role. This year we have started our quest with “501 start ups”, taking centre stage on 24-25th July, at the JW Marriott, Mumbai.
On a lighter note, April, being the fools’ month, we have got our own version of ‘Faking stories’ and ‘what-if’ situations which will tickle your funny bones until, we come with a big fat issue in May which is our 14th Anniversary special, featuring top 100 tech leaders, and curated stories to inspire, entertain and delight you.
