The new year is nearly upon us and with it a host of new books to bury our noses in. Over 30 years after the release of The Handmaid’s Tale, and following the bestselling dystopian’s adaptation into a critically acclaimed television series, Margaret Atwood is publishing a sequel, titled The Testaments, in September 2019.

Yes! this could be the year that George R.R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss get around to releasing their long-awaited The Winds of Winter and The Doors of Stone, but they don’t have a release date just yet.

  • The Royal Baby

Meghan had been thought to be around 12 weeks pregnant as she and Prince Harry announced their exciting baby news. A royal baby is on the cards early in 2019!

  • A $100 Million Fortnite Championship

An eye-popping figure that vaults Epic’s battle royale game to the top tier of e-sports. Epic will provide $100 million for Fortnite competition prize pools in its first year.

  • Popcorn Time

2018 was a whirlwind, but we still got some epic movies out of the madness. 2019 promises the same, with pivotal sequels, live-action reboots, books adapted for the screen – and new, original movies that might just blow us away. It’s all about the returners in 2019. Game of Thrones will wrap with its eighth and final season in April. On Netflix, the long-awaited third seasons of Stranger Things and The Crown will air, while on Sky Big Little Lies will be back with its second season.

In February, the V&A will open Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams, the largest and most comprehensive exhibition ever staged in the UK on the house of Dior. If that wasn’t enough of a reason to snap up tickets now, it will be the museum’s biggest fashion exhibition since the brilliant Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty in 2015.

  • The Year Of The Periodic Table

2019 will be the 150th anniversary since Dmitry Mendeleev discovered the Periodic System and has been proclaimed the “International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements” (IYPT2019).

  • Opioid Epidemics

Drug addiction and opioid abuse are ravaging America. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have lost their lives to drug abuse.

  • A Public Domain Year

Yes, we know, conversations about the intricacies of public domain works are endlessly fascinating and a great way to ensure no one talks to you at parties. But seriously, this is pretty cool. Starting January 1, hundreds of thousands of works of art, film, literature and music from 1923 will enter the public domain.

  • The Grand Canyon “turns” 100

Obviously, the Grand Canyon is way older than that (by about 6 million years), but 2019 will mark its 100th birthday as a national park. The National Park Service is planning a year of celebrations for the centennial, so if you’re lucky enough to be heading that way, your trip will be extra special.

  • The World Not Ending (Probably)

If you are conspiracy-minded, or just have a good memory when it comes to astronomical objects, you may recall a few years ago that an asteroid was predicted to come close to Earth in 2019, with a verrry slim chance of actually hitting us and capturing us all into fiery pieces of space dust.
