Have you Heard about the man who owned the Moon?
Denis Hope is making millions out of selling out the Moon.
He started in 1980 when he was going through a divorce and was running out of money when he got a light bulb moment while he thought of selling off the moon.
Now, for more than 35 years he’s been selling the land on the moon. “According to the 1967 United Nations Outer Space Treaty, no country can own a place on the moon”, but they haven’t said about individuals.
So he just filed a claim of ownership for the moon and wrote a letter to the US government but they never responded. “I’ve never had a challenge to my claim of ownership by any government on this planet, I’ve had a lot of people telling me I don’t have a right to do this but that’s just their opinion,” he said.
Since then he started selling lands on the moon, he’s sold more than 611 million acres on the moon. An acre-sized plot for $24.99. He also sold to Barbara Walters, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman including former US president George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.
He Once sold country sized plot (2.66 acres) for $250,000.
He has customers in 193 countries and has sold Billions of acres of land to more than 5 million people.
Can someone really own the Moon?
The answer is No. According to Article II of 1967 United Nation outer space treaty, “including the Moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.”
Buttt, there was no legal action taken against him and how he manages to do this, we don’t know and probably never will.
The agreement which he used to give to the landowners is just a piece of paper with a stamp on it which apparently is enough for someone to own the Moon (?)
