Editor’s Note August 2017
It’s the August issue and it cannot be more sacrosanct since the word ‘August’ means well-thought of and illustrious. That is precisely what we have put together – a special issue themed around India’s 70th Independent Anniversary. I am really proud of how bright the prospects of our country look in spite of poverty, nationalism, inequality, and deceptive politicians who have sucked trillions out of the country, made the Swiss Alps richer and kept systems and policing ineffective to suit themselves. Still, what a jewel our country is! I have often wondered – should we have been a crossover between a dictatorial setup and democracy instead of the world’s largest democracy? Something like what we have today with NAMO making things happen which was unimaginable a few years back. Demonetisation, GST, Inflow of FDI and other initiatives are all keeping the story of India shining loud. Only fear is that there have to be checks and balances, and media plays an important role in showing the report card and that should always be free, fair and unapologetic. Perhaps that’s one of the things that separates us from other media control freak nations – PAK & China for starters. We are not into politics and never will be, but when you are penning an issue around independence, it’s difficult to detach.
However, it’s all tech and cars from here, and August looks pretty promising with that. The biggest news which really plugged us all was Reliance’s announcement of the JioPhone at an unbelievably affordable price. Jio is already giving a headache to Vodafone and sending a chill down Airtel’s spine, but it’s definitely taking internet to the mass. I had a recent chat with the Sr. Management at YouTube and they are witnessing huge growth in their uptime with literally free data distributed by Jio with Vodafone and Airtel not very far behind. This is a sign of modern day independence, which starts with Internet, Roti, Kapda and Airbnb.
On an ending note, and just to add some “motivational life hacks”, I’d like to quote “One Day or Day One, You Decide.” Of course, it is quoted by the great Paulo Coelho, but it serves its purpose, right? Don’t make yourself wait too much now, just start flipping the pages already while we plan some more exciting wisdom for you!
